Have you ever tried liquid clay?
I had never tried liquid clay before for making monogrammed custom keychains, but after this DIY project, it’s one of my new favorite craft materials to work with! So many possibilities. I’ve done lots of work with clay before (Sculpey is my favorite clay brand!), but this was my first time using liquid clay. Liquid clay is a great material to work with for many reasons. What is liquid clay? Liquid clay is a type of oven-bake clay that comes in a bottle. The most popular brand is called Kato Polyclay. It’s a great alternative to regular oven-bake clay because it doesn’t need to be conditioned before use and it doesn’t crack as easily.
Liquid clay is a new favorite craft material to work with! So many possibilities. I’ve done lots of work with clay before (Sculpey is my favorite clay brand!), but never with liquid clay. My favorite clay brand is Sculpey, but I’ve never worked with liquid clay before. I was wondering if anyone had any tips.

Begin by setting your oven to the temperature suggested on your bottle of clay. Gently stir your Liquid Polymer Clay (you’ll want to do this before use every time). Then begin filling your alphabet molds with the Sculpey Liquid Polymer Clay. I recommend not filling them any higher than about a half, as the clay will expand slightly as it bakes. After you’ve filled your molds, place the mold onto a metal cookie sheet and bake in a preheated oven. Before removing, check that the clay is no longer soft. It should be hardened and slightly glossy. Finally, remove the clay shapes from the molds while they are still warm.
2nd step
- Bake according to the instructions which are provided on your bottle.
- Remove from the oven and cool it for half hour or one
- During the letters are cooling, you can make your leather or faux leather tassels if you like.
- On the larger piece, fringe one long side of the leather and cut it into strips leaving the opposite side intact.
- Fold it and glue the pieces into a loop.
- Once your clay letters are cooled, remove these from the mold. Trim any excess clay. Carefully screw an eye hook into the top of your letter during the process.
- Now you need to attach all of your other hardware, and the tassel as well.
